Why did you join CIVICUS?
I accepted my invitation to CIVICUS because community service is something that has been a part of my life since I was a Girl Scout in the first grade. Since then, I have been in an abundance of community service organizations and even started my own. I wanted to continue to have a positive impact on the community in college and CIVICUS seemed like the best way to do so. I also really wanted a way to make a big school feel smaller. I was in a close-knit program in high school that was very similar to CIVICUS where we participated in outside of school activities together and took certain classes as a program. I loved having that family-like atmosphere then, and, while at the Admitted Students Day, observed CIVICUS as being very similar.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?

My favorite CIVICUS memory is attending the Coffee House Talent Show we had this past December. It was so fun seeing my CIVICUS friends get in front of the room and show off their talent while being supported by their fellow CIVICUS members. It was a great, fun way to de-stress before the upcoming finals week!

Why did you join CIVICUS?
Shortly after being accepted to the University of Maryland I received a letter inviting me to join CIVICUS. I was excited but had so many questions. I had never even heard of this living and learning program before. What did the program focus on? Would this program actually be a good fit for me? I then visited the website and it had seemed as though CIVICUS was made for me. No other living and learning program, I had heard or read about, stated the importance of their core values. The five pillars of CIVICUS were almost identical to what I value in life, and at such a large university it was very important that I make connections with people that had similar values as me. To this day I am very happy I accepted my invitation. Not only have I made great friends, but I have stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a leader within the community.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?

My favorite CIVICUS event so far has been the winter talent show. People had such funny and cool talents they were able to showcase along with coffee, a variety of pastries, and holiday cheer.

Why did you join CIVICUS?
I joined CIVICUS because I knew that the program pushes students off the College Park campus and gets them involved in the greater Washington DC area. Whether it be a community service project or internship, CIVICUS presents many opportunities to create a network of well-respected individuals in all career fields. With the guidance of the CIVICUS program, I knew I would be set up for success.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?
My favorite CIVICUS experience was the retreat at the beginning of the year before classes started. It was a great way to make friends early on!

Why did you join CIVICUS?
Ever since I was a freshman in high school, I associated college with CIVICUS. My older brother was a part of CIVICUS when he attended Maryland, and he always raved about the close-knit community he had been a part of because of the program and the unique and engaging classes that CIVICUS offered. By the time I finished high school, my interests in sociology, service learning, and leadership had solidified, hinting that CIVICUS would be the perfect program for me. On a more personal level, CIVICUS offered me a challenge because I would be living in a building where I knew no one and would not be living with the many students from my high school who attend this university. I love to meet new people and CIVICUS did just that for me - I have made tons of new friends,  making the transition into college a lot easier and more exciting given that I practically live with my classmates!

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?

Picking one CIVICUS experience is incredibly difficult because the directors of the program provide us so many opportunities to kick back and have fun, whether it be through our annual Halloween event, this year's Coffeehouse, or even our Bingo nights! Even more than that, hours spent laughing in the lounge also adds to the overall experience.  I'd say my favorite event so far has been the End-of-the-Year CIVICUS Dinner. It was a great way to end the year all dolled up and really give me a chance to reflect back on the best moments of the year. Since I'm a sophomore, I've only experienced one of these dinners, but given how fun it was, I'm extremely excited for this year's event, even if it is my last one.

Why did you join CIVICUS?
I joined CIVICUS because community service has been a big part of my life thus far and I definitely wanted to continue giving back to the community throughout college. I also hoped that joining a living-learning program would allow me to meet people who have similar interests as me and would help me find my home away from home!

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?

My favorite thing about CIVICUS so far is not only the fact that we live together but the fact that we also have classes together. It is one thing to get to know someone outside of the classroom, but once you put us all in the classroom, it is an entirely different situation. It is amazing to see everyone's interesting thoughts, strong opinions and endless amount of creativity. I have definitely learned so much since the start of the year and I cannot wait to continue learning with this intelligent group of people. It's also a huge plus that our classes are in the basement of Somerset!

Why did you join CIVICUS?
It seemed like a great way to make a big school small, which was very appealing to me. I also volunteered a lot in high school, and I wanted to keep that trend going in college!

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?
I volunteered at a dog adoption event, and I'm a huge dog person, so that was definitely a highlight for me! It was my favorite experience so far because everyone was incredibly happy to be there to lend a helping hand, and I became great friends with a two-year-old hound named Jackson (who was a very good boy).

Why did you join CIVICUS?
I have always had a passion for community service and helping others. In high school, I was very involved with many clubs and organizations that were centered around community service, and I wanted to continue this involvement in college. CIVICUS was right up my alley for that reason, and it has given me the opportunity to take my contribution to society to a new level. Additionally, CIVICUS members say that it "makes a large campus feel smaller" and that's absolutely correct. I was interested in joining CIVICUS because of the instant, close-knit community you gain.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?
I especially loved the CIVICUS retreat at the beginning of the year. It was the first time I got to spend time with both new and returning CIVICUS members. We had team building activities that created that community I've heard so much about and it introduced me to the close friends I have now. I loved kayaking, making s'mores, playing games, and learning more about CIVICUS.

In high school, I valued leadership activities and serving my community.  CIVICUS has provided opportunities for me to further develop my leadership skills while continuing to give back to the campus and local communities.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?
The CIVICUS tradition of hosting grilled cheese study breaks during the week of final exams is awesome! It gives me time away from my homework and time to socialize with my friends. Even when there’s not an official study break event, there’s always someone in Somerset available to go to the dining hall with me or spend some time relaxing after a busy day.

Why did you join CIVICUS?

My cousins are part of the CIVICUS family and I really enjoyed hearing their stories about the great community built here. I wanted to "do good" and to be a part of a community that helped others.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?

My favorite experience is one weekend where I did two service projects. On Saturday, I hung out with the cutest dog I have ever met at a Lucky Dog adoption event. She eventually was adopted at the end of the day to a great family. On Sunday, I spent time at my favorite service project, Ronald McDonald House. I love going there, hearing about their progress as a charity, and sometimes meeting the nice families who stay there. They are always very welcoming and appreciative of all the chores we do around the house.

Why did you join CIVICUS?

CIVICUS is not only a community where you can prosper but a family where you can grow. Coming from New Jersey, I knew that it would be hard adjusting to a new environment, especially at a university with 28,000 other students. I joined CIVICUS because I wanted to make a big university small. Living together in Somerset,  in addition to taking various classes together,  allowed for all of us to grow extremely close. I knew this close-knit family would provide me with a foundation that would start off my journey at UMD on the right track. CIVICUS also allowed me to continue with something that is very important to me - giving back to the community. Joining CIVICUS was definitely the right decision for me.

What has been your favorite CIVICUS experience so far?

My favorite CIVICUS experience so far would have to be my work with the organization Only Make Believe. The volunteer work for this organization consisted of making costumes for hospitalized children. It was very rewarding to give back to the community in this creative way and also to have other CIVICUS Associates by my side.
